The Sensual World Wednesday, Jun. 11, 2003 - 5:04 p.m. I went ahead and put the auburn coloring in my hair this afternoon. The only change that seems to have happened is that instead of being a beautiful redhead, I now have brown hair with a slightly red tinge, that, in bright light, makes me look like a Crissy doll. (I just heard almost everybody under the age of thirty go "Huh?"...) I was hoping for a My So-Called Life thing, but that's definitely not what happened here. Oh, well. It will wash out of my so-called hair. --- Paul and I had a sweet talk this morning. He's adjusting to his new eating habits, but it's a major change for him, and he said he wasn't sure how this story was going to end. I told him that he did an incredibly brave and wonderful thing by choosing this surgery; that this would help him to live a longer and healthier life; and that I wanted to be his dance partner at his grandchildren's wedding. We also talked a little bit about how he loves to cook; he's been doing it since the age of twelve; and that it just doesn't feel quite right to not be able to plate up wtih the rest of the table full of people that he's just cooked something for. Then I said something along the lines of suggesting he concentrate on the rest of the sensual aspects of food. When I was dieting back in 2000, during which time I lost 60 lbs, and only about 10-15 lbs of it has crept back on (depending on the season) -- I never lost my enthusiasm for the actual cooking process. The touch of the food before it's prepared, and after. The scent, the presentation, the delight of the beauty of it on the serving plate, and watching other people's faces and reactions after being fed something wonderful that I cooked for them -- all of those are things I still enjoyed, even if I couldn't sit down to the same sized serving -- or anything at all sometimes -- of what everybody else was enjoying. I hope Paul is able to reclaim that. ---
