FRIDAY FIVE Aug 29 / MTV VMA

Friday, Aug. 29, 2003 - 4:08 a.m.

This week's Friday Five: (Questions are boldface, my answers appear beneath.)

Are you going to school this year?

A: Not this year. But next year probably. At the age of thirty-eight and change, I have finally decided what to do with my life -- I'm going to go into social work and be a crisis counselor. Too many damaged people are walking around without help, including the one that got to me earlier this year. I want to fix people like him so that nobody else will be hurt the way I was.

If yes, where are you going (high school, college, etc.)? If no, when did you graduate?

A: I graduated from Yuba City High School in 1982 and went to college for a semester a year and a half later. Then I got married at the age of 19, which as everybody knows is the age at which a human female acquires the sum total of all knowledge.

What are/were your favorite school subjects?

A: English, Radio & Television Broadcasting, and Choir.

What are/were your least favorite school subjects?

A: Anything math related, because I have dyslexia.

Have you ever had a favorite teacher? Why was he/she a favorite?

A: Yes. Several come to mind. Mr. John O'Shea (Grades 2 and 3) of Park Avenue Elementary School in Yuba City, California. Mr. Curt Schroeder (Sophomore year English) of Yuba City High School. But the teacher who had the most influence on me was Mr. Jay Norton, who was my Radio & Television Broadcasting teacher during my senior year of high school. He was an unforgiveable screaming liberal who nevertheless turned me on to talk radio and taught me to seek out news from more than one source. He frequently smelled like marijuana, but that never detracted from his teaching style. Mr. Norton is also notable to me for having awarded me my one and only A+ in my entire school history.

I sat up and tried to stomach the MTV Video Music Awards last night. One of my newest friends is turning twenty-three next week and I thought I owed it to her to at least have a peek to see what passes for music and for fashion these days. I'm stunned. At one point I'm not even sure the award recipients were speaking English.

However, I must say that one of the personal highlights for me was watching Eminem beat the shit out of one of the Crank Yanker puppets, as I've been longing to do that myself since that show started. Thank you, Marshall.

The VMA's were horrid, weren't they? I was wincing and begging my friend to change the channel because they were just... dumb. If they'd been amusing, I'd been fine. The singing was bad, the jokes were lame, and the presenters and recipients... ugh. And I"m still in my 20's.
