FRIDAY FIVE September 19th / Blimey! Friday, Sept. 19, 2003 - 9:41 a.m. This week's Friday Five: (Questions are boldface, my answers appear beneath.) A: This is a tough one. I almost said k.d. lang here, because I enjoy her work so very much -- and I almost said Eminem here, too, because he makes people think, but I think I'm going to go ahead and say Vince Clarke, because he wrote "Only You", which is the song that saved my life. What one singer/musician can you not stand? Why? A: I can't stand any performance artist who realizes they influence young people but who takes no responsibility for their actions. If your favorite singer wasn't in the music business, do you think you would still like him/her as a person? A: I have no idea, because I don't know anything personal about any of the favorites I mentioned. Although, I think having dinner with Mr. Mathers might be interesting. Have you been to any concerts? If yes, who put on the best show? A: Erasure, 'The Other Tour' Bill Graham Civic Auditorium, San Francisco, March 21, 2003. However, this is closely followed by STYX at the Fillmore, November 14, 1999. What are your thoughts on downloading free music online vs. purchasing albums? Do you feel the RIAA is right in its pursuit to stop people from dowloading free music? A: If you download something and then enjoy it, go buy the CD and support the artist, otherwise you're stealing. On the other hand, many non-mainstream artists get their work heard via peer-to-peer downloading, so I think it's a double-edged sword. As for the RIAA, it can do whatever it wants, but the sad fact is, the artists probably won't see very much money in the long run from any lawsuits that come to fruition, due to legal fees. In the meantime, if you are on a budget, buy an artist's CD -used-, so you will at least save money and know the artist already got their pittance from the original sale of the CD.
--- Okay. Now, if you wanna play Friday Five, go here. --- I finished the photo album for the Schultz family. Fifty-one pictures were developed from two rolls of twenty-seven exposures, which means there were probably several pictures of the inside of my purse. --- I stepped on the scale last night. Two pounds came back, but the other thirteen are still MIA. Yay! --- Also, don't forget -- today is International Talk Like A Pirate Day. Blimey, ye readers o Diaryland!... ---
