Rory Root 1958 - 2008

Rory Root, whose Comic Relief store in Berkeley has been a mainstay of the Bay Area comic book scene, (and who has been humorously compared to The Simpsons' Comic Book Guy,) died yesterday of complications following hernia surgery.

Details for his services will be forthcoming on the Comic Relief website.

Goddammit.

It's a tragedy. Rory Root was one of the few retailers of comics (and related items) that was also a huge fan of the medium. He was always willing to answer a customer's questions (and in great detail!), and maintained the policy of helping fulfill just about any order that came his way. If his shop didn't have it, he'd track it down for you. Just an amazing, sweet guy -- and he had more business savvy than 90% of the people in publications retail. He'll really be missed -- especially by people who knew him. Too many of the "important" comics fans in the Bay Area have left us: Rory, John Barrett, Steve Johnson, Bob Sidebottom. It's never easy losing a friend of many years.
