Friday Five & Myth Appreciation

Friday, May. 23, 2008 - 1:58 a.m.

Dinner was really good on Thursday night; I made meatloaf for the first time in months. Side dish of mashed potatoes.

Very Leave It To Beaver.

Gotta share this thread from FARK where a recent Photoshop contest asks its audience to depict the last thing they'd want to see before they die.

A few of the FARK wags decided to treat it as if it read show the last thing you do NOT want to see, and a few simply displayed their concept of the afterlife.

But overall, I think this turned out to be a nicely done thread.

In other news, last night was the last time John will be needing my help with iTunes or docking his shuffle at my computer.

He's all set to take the creative reins and oversee his own playlists on his own laptop.

Wow. His own laptop.

That just looks so cool to me when I write it.

Friday Five:

What were some of the smells and tastes of your childhood?

Play Doh, cold pizza, pan-fried okra, dirt from my grandmother's backyard, the scent of her Honest Scotch Snuff.

What did you have as a child that you do not think children today have?

Less fear of harm from adults.

What elementary grade was your favorite?

Third grade. Best teacher, excellent friends.

What summer do you remember the best as a child?

The summer I impaled my foot on a toothpick was pretty interesting. Never had a tetanus shot before!

What one piece of advice would you give to your younger self, and at what age?

No boy on the face of this earth is worth crying over until you are out of high school.

Okay, link is to the left somewhere.

UPDATE: As I was preparing this post to be uploaded, I learned of the death of Robert Asprin, author of the MythAdventures series.

Twenty years ago, in what has come to feel like another incarnation, I spent a couple of memorable years as the fiancee of Kevin Standlee, and as an officer of the MythAdventures Fan Club. At science fiction conventions, while Kevin was off schmoozing, I was most frequently found at the MAFC table, wearing a green T shirt adorned with the words 'Ms. Mythfit', and schmoozing with the considerable numbers of appreciative fans of his series, most of whom actually laid out money to obtain the fan club premiums and a four issue subscription to the club's newsletter, MythInformation.

I only had the pleasure of meeting Robert Asprin in person once in my life, at the San Diego ComicCon in 1988 -- but he proved to be gracious, interesting and one of the most quietly spectacular people I had ever met.

RIP, Bob.

May you find the next Dimension as wonderful as you made this one.

Oh what a shame that we have lost such a wonderful writer. I have loved Robert Aspirin for most of my life. I'm not sure there is a funnier sci-fi writer out there.
