Hands & AJ

Tuesday, Jun. 10, 2008 - 12:02 a.m.

Here is what my peeling hands looked like last night:

Despite appearances, this does not hurt in the least, honest.

As you can see, it just looks peculiar.

I noodled around and postponed my travel for a few days until this is done.

I am sad to note the passing of Algis Budrys.

AJ Budrys was arguably the most interactive and accessable big-name professional writer you would ever see at a science fiction convention. He was always generous with his time when he was asked to appear on panels, and after hours, one of his very favorite things to do was find an excellent party, preferably one with something to drink, and plalnt himself there and engage his fans in conversation.

At a Norwescon about twenty years ago sortakinda, my then husband Michael Winderman and I had the privelege of splitting a bottle of peach hard cider with him while we all watched Buckaroo Banzai on the convention's tv feed.

We weren't granted the privelege of hearing him sing any Lithuanian love songs as he was sometimes inclined to do when he had a bit of a skinful, but he was very kind to a room full of wet nosed fanboys, and it was a slightly surreal but very memorable evening.

Not a long post today. Have a good Tuesday.

Wow... My favorite book by Budrys was "Michaelmas." I've read that book about 3 dozen times, having picked it up back in 1977 when I was a journalism major. He was an amazingly gifted writer. I've met a few famous names in the past few years; Hal Clement, about three months before he passed on - a real curmudgeon. Spider Robinson, who talked to me for almost 90 minutes at ConCarolinas down in Charlotte NC after he found out we had a mutual acquaintance in common, just to name two. I wish I could have met Budrys... and Heinlein... and Asimov... And Pohl... that would have been a real drinkers party! LOL

Brin, I'm so glad that doesn't hurt. I did have sympathy pain when I saw the pic though. It looks like you dipped your hands in elmer's glue. I used to love to do that and then peel it off when it dried, (well in school anyway, I don't do that anymore). ;)
