Broadcast Blues

Sunday, May. 24, 2009 - 1:39 a.m.

Saturday was quiet here. When we wake up, the routine here is to conjure some breakfast, and watch a couple of episodes of The Dick Van Dyke show on DVD.

This show is a favorite of mine, and so it's a nice way to start the weekend.

It's not being broadcast anywhere at the moment, so to have it handy is a real pleasure.

My work with the bass is progressing. I haven't exercised my hands like this since I was around eleven years old, when the combination of bowling and piano lessons gave me a grip that drove terror into the hearts of the biggest boys in school.

Right now, it's quite a challenge to do an octave, but as my hand restrengthens, it should get better.

Here's a Friday 5, somewhat late:

What kind of out-of-school lessons did you take as a kid?

Piano lessons, at the insistance of my grandmother, who paid for them. After two years, I hadn't progressed out of my first several lesson books and then we found out I had dyslexia, and that the notes I'd been looking at were scuttering around on the page like ants.

What valuable lesson did you learn this past week?

Pay very careful attention late at night when you're opening a can of cola to drink. It might turn out to be V8.

Who in your life really needs to be taught a lesson?

Oh my god, did you want that list in alphabetical order or just as I think of them? :-)

What kinds of lessons would you love to have a private teacher for right now?

I wish I knew somebody who could travel here and teach me bass guitar for gas / food.

What steps have you taken to lessen the impact of these rough economic times?

Lessen? Lesson? Oh, gosh, how clever. :-P We're using generics and house brands whenever possible.

The link to this Friday 5 is above.

There's a really good discussion over on FARK about the satanic spawn that is Clear Channel; it's worth a look whether you're in the industry or not.

Nothing else to report. Have a great Sunday, and if you have a long weekend, enjoy that, too.
