Popcult Farewells

Friday, Jun. 26, 2009 - 12:40 a.m.

Yesterday was a strange and sad day for American pop culture.

We lost Farrah Fawcett in the morning, and incredibly, we lost Michael Jackson in the afternoon.

Somebody over on FARK said it best -- "It was as if millions of tabloids cried out in terror and were suddenly silenced."

May they sleep in peace and wake in wonderment.

Last night John pondered the irony of the possibility that Michael Jackson's estate is likely to finally be out of debt sometime in the next two or three days hours or so from the performace rights fees; a feat not managed by the artist while he was still living.

The apocalypse is near when the news stations are playing more music videos than MTV.

Thursday seemed to drag on forever, and just made me feel so ancient.

But it beats the alternative, I guess!

---

In light of the sad news of yesterday's sad news, here's a little something that gladdened my heart.

Tori Amos actually expelled a noisy cell-phone user in the front row of her concert.

Dear Tori Amos: I hope every performer in the world that experienced this rudeness will do what you did.

Thank you, THANK you, Tori.

We lucked out at the Michael Franks event; everybody was polite and attentive to the music even though they were lubricated; and the sticking up the cell phone to let the friends listen or to take pictures of every blabba fraggin moment in time bullshit was blessedly non-existent.

---

No official cause of the demise of The King Of Pop; reports say he hadn't been well the last day or so, even more so than usual.

Kind of like John Ritter. And Steve Allen.

I think we'll be hearing about some kind of undiagnosed heart issue, myself.

We'll see.

---

That's pretty much it. Have a good Friday.

Yay for Tori Amos. It's about time. We were at my son's graduation on Tuesday and some idiot was taking a phone call while her child was graduating! I also hear you on the feeling very old yesterday. And yes, it was a long sad day.
