Birthday Wish

Wednesday, Apr. 07, 2010 - 12:31 a.m.

Today, April 7th, is my birthday.

I am this many (holds up forty-five fingers).

---

I'm also still in Anaheim, where I've just received one of the most stunning birthday gifts in ages.

As you well know if you have been reading me for any length of time, I am a fan of the sport of curling.

Old Buddy Dave went on a quest, and procured a miniature curling stone for me.

Not just any stone -- it's made of Ailsa Craig granite.

Now that I actually have touched this stone for myself, I can understand why it's the stone of choice for curlers.

Old Buddy Dave, once again, you've knocked me kicking with this surprise. Thank you!

---

Looking back on my life, I am trying to think of the places I've been when I've observed my birthday.

I once spent one at Woodleaf, which was sixth grade camp. As a sophomore in high school, I spent the day with my arse in a rocking chair, raising money in a rock-a-thon so the girls' choir could go to San Francisco that next month. In 1983, I was in the hospital, recuperating from ostomy surgery. And a couple of times, it's fallen on Easter Sunday, which is awesome.

I've spent them in San Francisco with my wondrous husband John.

And I've enjoyed coming to Anaheim and been at the birthday mercies of Old Buddy Dave.

But mostly -- I'm just glad to continue to be having birthdays.

I'd like as many as possible, please.

---

Also, I have a favor to ask you.

One of my regular readers and favorite people, Scott Hysmith, undergoes shoulder surgery today.

I thought he was joking when he confirmed the date of the procedure. It's also the birthday of one of his chilluns, too.

So, please, folks, thanks for the birthday wishes, but I'd be most obliged if you would now direct your energies to a successful surgery and a quick recovery for Scott.

Thanks.

---

All right, that's it. Have a good Wednesday.
