Pool & Portabello Cheese

Sunday, Aug. 28, 2005 - 1:15 p.m.

Saturday afternoon, John dropped me off at the 16th & Mission BART station, and JJ met me there.

We began walking west and after awhile I said "Where we going?" and she laughed and told me we were going to The 500 Club.

We got there and in the back room, there was a pool table.

I have never played pool before. There's chalk involved. I wore a black t-shirt.

JJ showed me what to do. Here's a very nice action shot:

And here's another. Yes, I asked her permission before I posted this.

For all I know she's got one like this of me.

And here's the obligatory arm's length self-portrait...

I also had the privelege of meeting JJ's friend Egg. He's an excellent pool player, gave me really good advice which was probably the reason I only scratched twice in the entire afternoon, and very graciously set up several idiot-proof shots for me that would have gone right in if it had been anybody else other than me behind the cue stick.

After he left, JJ and I each nursed one more glass of our beverage of choice, then we went to Kelly's for a hamburger.

Every place I have ever eaten in the Mission District has been amazing, and Kelly's is no exception. Fantastic burgers!

Here is a picture of what JJ ordered; the Portabello Cheese Burger:

No, that's not a gum graft on top of the beef; it's a sweet cheese that's got pink coloring. When it is melted, it looks a little gory and clinical, but it's really delicious.

We ate, and then I called John to pick us up.

He did.

It was a really nice afternoon.

Today, my right arm is on fire, and my left wrist feels like it has termites in it. But that does not erode the memory of the sunshine, the laughter involved in the game, and the company of one of my favorite people in the world.
