Friday Five & Dubai

Friday, Mar. 10, 2006 - 2:37 a.m.

Friday Five:

Who was your favorite all time teacher(s)?

My elementary school favorite was John O'Shea, who taught me in second and third grade. My middle school favorite was Joyce Schipper, who was my choir teacher in seventh grade. My high school favorite was a tie between Dean Estabrook (choir) and Jay Norton, (Radio & Television)

What did they teach?

Well, I am particularly appreciative of the fact that in addition to the regular curriculum, Jay Norton also taught me how to listen to a news story and apply the bullshit detector. He influences me to this day.

What is your best memory from that class?

Choir was always nice because I love music. Radio and Television was amazing because Jay Norton gave me the only A+ I ever received in my entire academic career.

Did you ever have a crush on a teacher and if so who?

Had it pretty bad for Mr. O'Shea. Hm. Come to think of it, when I grew up, I married an Irishman named John. Funny how those patterns get set early, huh?...

What is the craziest/wildest/weirdest thing you (or someone you know) ever did at school?

Well, I think it was the time I and a bunch of friends filled somebody's car up with crumpled newspaper and beanbag pellets after I had a very very bad breakup with a cowardly jerk who simply stopped calling me. It was a windy day, and people all over town could tell where that car had been.

---

Something bothers me about the voice of the people raised in unison and putting a stop to the Dubai port handover.

Now that we have reminded our elected representatives that they work for us and not the other way around -- we've felt our oats, and will speak up and do it again.

And they can't have that.

I predict an escalation of intangible fear in the next several weeks. We were docile after 9/11 -- but now that we've found our voice again, I wonder how long we'll be allowed to keep it.

---

By the way -- for about the last month or so, my favorite Finnish Diarylander has been posting her entries predominantly in English while she's been in India. She is a lovely writer, and even after I've been slogging through those dreadfully poor Finnish-To-English autobot translators in an attempt to read her Finnish, she's still very easy for an English-Only like me to understand.

So to have her be making so many of her entries in English is a special gift and an opportunity not to be missed.

Okay, so, she's also the ONLY Finnish Diarylander on my list. So what? She's still good!

---

That's it. Have a good Friday.
