A Town Without Pitney

Wednesday, Apr. 05, 2006 - 6:00 a.m.

I was up early this morning and saw the following very sad news cross the wires:

Gene Pitney, a member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame whose hits included "Town Without Pity" and "Only Love Can Break a Heart," died Wednesday at a hotel in Wales after playing a show, his agent said. He was 65.

Pitney was found dead in his hotel room in Cardiff, Wales. Police said the death did not appear suspicious. "We don't have a cause of death at the moment but looks like it was a very peaceful passing," said Pitney's tour manager, James Kelly. "He was found fully clothed, on his back, as if he had gone for a lie down. It looks as if there was no pain whatsoever."

He added: "Last night was generally one of the happiest and most exuberant performances we've seen out of him. He was absolutely on top of his game and was really happy with the show."

He had one of the most emotive singing voices I have ever heard.

In other news... Well. Isn't our current administration just a great big hunk of wonderful?...Get a load of this:

The deputy press secretary for the US Department of Homeland Security has been arrested for using the internet to seduce someone whom he thought was a teenage girl.

Brian J Doyle, 55, was arrested on charges of use of a computer to seduce a child and transmission of harmful material to a minor. Doyle had a sexually explicit conversation with a computer user whom he believed was a 14-year-old girl whose profile he saw on the internet on March 14, authorities in Florida said. An undercover computer crimes detective had posed as the girl.

Doyle sent the "girl" pornographic movie clips and had sexually explicit conversations via the internet, the statement said. During other online conversations, Doyle revealed his name, that he worked for the US Department of Homeland Security and offered his office and government issued mobile phone numbers, the sheriff's office said. Doyle also sent photos of himself to the "girl", but authorities said they were not sexually explicit. On several occasions, Doyle instructed the "girl" to perform a sexual act while thinking of him and described explicit activities he wanted to do with her, investigators said.

Doyle was expected to be placed on administrative leave today.

Note the wording in that last sentence. There's no CONFIRMATION he'll be placed on administrative leave.

So what's next? an in-house investigation to see who else in the administration is being naughty?

Like, oh, the baseball commissioner offering to investigate and see if the players are juiced?

Mice in charge of cheese. Who watches the watchmen?
