Payback Surprise Visit Monday, Apr. 24, 2006 - 2:19 a.m. A year ago was the last time I saw Br1@n Cl@yt0n in person. At that time, he told me that he wouldn't be like all of the other friends who leave but promise they'll be back to visit. He's been back to San Francisco more than once, and only once he let me know ahead of time. He and his girlfriend were going to a nearly-sold-out concert and didn't have time for a visit. By the time the email got to me, the concert was sold out. No, kiddo, standing next to you at a concert and trying to be heard above the din no longer constitutes a visit. My hearing is too shot. But thanks for the thought. --- So I was thinking about this on Sunday and feeling very sorry for myself for most of the day. John knew something was off but I didn't tell him exactly what it was because it wasn't anything he could fix. Right before I went to bed, my cell phone rang -- and it was the custom ringtone I'd set for Old Buddy Dave's best guy friend Charlie. Charlie and I had a misunderstanding some weeks back and I figured this must be the post-game analysis call, which was fine -- then he started talking to me about landmarks and street names in San Francisco. When he said "Okay, now I'm on Market and Fifth" it finally occurred to me that he was in fact HERE in San Francisco. He'd come up to see Mari Iijima perform at the Cherry Blossom Festival, and surprised me with a visit. John was in pajamas and settling in to his recliner with an eye toward watching Pride & Prejudice and trying to fall asleep. I got dressed, attempted to talk Charlie out of the labryinth that is the Presidio, and finally was able to point him to our place. I dashed out the front gate just in time to see him shut his lights off. We cleared up the misunderstanding, and had a really wonderful visit. I'm glad he got to see where I live. Apparently Dave knew he was coming up, and didn't say anything to me about it. Sneakypoo! Payback, etc... :-) --- Okay, that's it. Have a good Monday if at all possible. ---
