Grit & Swiping Sunday, Aug. 20, 2006 - 1:37 a.m. Yesterday, Saturday, was the first day of our Great Wheat Flour Experiment. I have been phasing out my use of white flour since going on Atkins, but in two areas, I have failed miserably. One area is pizza dough, the other is pancakes. So I thought I'd try and substitute wheat flour for the white flour in pancakes, and brown sugar for white sugar in the pancake recipe I like the most. I've never worked with wheat flour before. I managed to make it into pancake batter, but it still was so coarse that it looked like a milkshake. We tried my efforts, and even though I thought they were okay, John said they were too gritty, and pleaded with me to go back to white flour and white sugar for pancakes. I agreed, and as a reward, he took me to Pacifica Saturday afternoon for lunch at Denny's. Caryn wasn't there, but it was still a nice experience because our guy was Jeff, and he's pretty good. --- I haven't done an Unconscious Mutterings in a long time, so here goes. It's a word association exercise, and I almost always find it interesting.

However, if I have to be wrong about something, I'm thinking that it would be a relief to have the mystery solved. --- Finally, I have to brag on my husband John, as he's inadvertently become a part of comic book history. An article about swiping comic book art which first appeared in his first fanzine, MCR, has become famous via the subject matter himself. Dan Adkins mentioned it in an interview he gave to TwoMorrows, which is the website of a publishing company devoted to the history of comic artwork and publications. My opinion on comic book art swiping is this: If you have to swipe, you shouldn't be in the business. It's theft, as plain and simple as that. Now, before you get your knickers in a twist, I do know the difference between a homage, an honest mistake, and a swipe. One is reverent, one is forgiveable, and one is just plain fucking wrong. As my regular readers know, I'm a complete BitchCunt when it comes to anybody utilizing my original concepts without credit or permission, and back in the day, Dan Adkins thought nothing of taking the hard work of other people and just dithering with it enough to make his own deadlines. After reading the MCR article, I was unimpressed with this man's ethics. I'm very glad to read that his point of view has shifted since then. --- Okay. Enough. Have a good Sunday! ---
