The News Today, Oh Boy

Tuesday, Aug. 22, 2006 - 12:00 a.m.

These days I can barely stand to look at the news headlines, but not for the usual reasons.

Here's what's happening in the world.

In the UK, eleven people have been charged with the attempt to smuggle bomb components onto airlines and conspiracy to murder. Had they succeeded, hundreds if not thousands of people would have been killed in midair over the Atlantic Ocean.

Also in the UK, Keane lead singer Tom Chaplin is being treated for drink and drug use.

Former President Gerald Ford had a pacemaker implanted.

Iran is brandishing a sword regarding threats against Israel, possibly involving low-level nuclear weaponry.

Israel dropped hundreds of clusterbombs on Lebanon in the waning hours before the truce was enabled. Families are finding the bombs in the rubble and when they try to see what they are, the bombs explode. Most of the injuries are to children.

But you know what?

None of that is in the headlines here in the USA.

You know what pushed ALL of that off the front pages?

John Mark Karr, the prime suspect in the JonBenet Ramsey case.

But here's the part I'm sick about.

The fact that our media is granting him ANY airtime before the DNA results are returned, and the fact that John and Burke Ramsey are being stalked again by that media so soon after Patsy Ramsey died of cancer is nothing short of revolting.

I cannot believe there's NOTHING else worldwide that deserves more coverage than this mess.

In other news, I'm posting this because this was actually somebody we knew and did business with:

(CBS 5) SAN FRANCISCO Police are asking for the public's help in solving the murder of a Richmond District grocery store owner late Saturday.

A customer at the New California Food Market on the corner of California Steet and 19th Avenue discovered 54-year-old Jin Sun Lee slumped behind a counter around 5:30 pm Saturday. At first, police thought Lee had gone unconscious after suffering a medical problem. But after being taken to St. Mary's Hosptial, doctors there discovered she had been shot. Lee was pronounced dead from a single gunshot wound a short time later, and police were summoned to the hospital.

Police are asking that any customers who were in the market between 5:00 and 6:00 pm Saturday contact the San Francisco Police Department's Homicide section at (415) 553-1145 or call the confidential tip line at (415) 575-4444.

We had driven past this market about an hour prior to this, on the way home from Denny's. We'd stopped at the crosswalk to let a very slow person get all the way across, and I could remember looking into the store, and looking up at the sign and wondering what font it was painted in.

It must have happened just as we got home.

Finally, I need you all to give some good vibes to Old Buddy Dave today; he gets to go to the doctor for something and he doesn't like doctors.

There's a blip on his radar and he just wants to make sure everything is ok. Forgive me for being obtuse; he will write about it if he feels like doing so, but please trust me, he'd appreciate your good thoughts.

Thanks. You guys always come through and I adore you all for that.

---

That's it. Have a Tuesday.
