Round and Round

Tuesday, Oct. 10, 2006 - 2:47 a.m.

Yesterday, I tried that old trick of putting on my jeans while they were still damp, to make them fit better.

It seems to have worked, and it was worth putting my life at risk.

---

Well, I went about a dozen rounds yesterday with a very patient IT over on 4BC named Steve Exton. He was infinitely patient with me when I said I was suddenly unable to hear the 4BC web feed. What he'd done was upgrade the sound of the feed, which sort of left us Mac users in the dark. It *shouldn't* have, according to all of the promises the media readers made to us, but it *did*.

However, before our back and forthing was done for the night, somehow, the feed was restored, crummy sound and all.

So, yay Steve or whoever did that. The original and ongoing purpose of the World Wide Web is to make information available to as many people as possible. I can't really parse the websites that have the disclaimers that seem as if they read like: "This content only available if you download this reader while your eyes are crossed and install it on the thirty-first of February while Earth is being invaded by Martians."

It's the World Wide Web. If you are offering content, then at least try and remember why Tim Berners-Lee invented in in the first place. The more universal, the better.

Whoops, almost stayed too long on my soapbox there. Sorry.

Anyway, what I said over and over to the 4BC people was that I will be most happy to settle for a slightly compressed sound as opposed to no sound at all.

At first we thought it was just errors in my system alone, but then I buttonholed the only other person I know who is Mac OSX on a land line, -- Bob Lai -- and asked him to also try and score the new and improved feed.

He couldn't, and I told him who to write to.

As of this writing, the feed is available to me again. I'm afraid to turn it off. :-)

It's been something of a revolving door, but through all of this, the IT has been wonderful.

Good on ya, Steve. Thank you so much for your work with me Monday.

That's it. Have a Tuesday.
