Jeopardy & Ronn

Tuesday, Sept. 18, 2007 - 12:24 a.m.

I was watching Jeopardy last night, and one of the questions they provided the answer to was "What are the Miranda Rights?"

And being online as that question was stated, I went and looked around and did a little reading, to find out whatever happened to the man this statute was named for.

I found the following information in Wikipedia, in the entry for Ernesto Arturo Miranda:

After serving one-third of his sentence and being turned down for parole four times Miranda was paroled in December 1972. After his release, he started selling autographed Miranda Warning cards for $1.50 (American Heritage). Over the next years Miranda was arrested numerous times for minor driving offenses and eventually lost the right to drive a car. He was arrested for the possession of a gun but the charges were dropped. But because this violated his parole he was sent back to Arizona State Prison for another year.

After his release, Miranda spent most of his time in poorly kept bars and cheap hotels in the bad section of Phoenix. Miranda, then working as a delivery driver, participated in a card game at the La Amapola Bar. Miranda had taken on the role as a minor celebrity, passing out Miranda cards and telling his story. On January 31, 1976, a violent fight broke out and Miranda received a mortal knife wound; he was pronounced dead on arrival at Good Samaritan Hospital. He was 34 years old. Police officers apprehended a male shortly afterwards and read him his Miranda rights from a small rectangular card. However, the suspect refused to cooperate with police, and due to a lack of evidence could not be prosecuted for Miranda's murder.

I'd always wondered what happened to the guy. In trouble all his life, and dead of a damned knife fight in a bar.

Sometimes the gifts each of us has manifests in unusual ways, huh?

Yesterday morning, I heard something that worried me. Ronn Owens, my KGO morning guy, sounded slow and slurry and a little disoriented on the air, and at the end of the first of his usually three hour long program, he was excused for the day and replaced by John Rothmann.

He didn't sound drunk, and he didn't sound tired -- it's the sort of slurry thing that happened to me back in July when I had my uber migraine / mini stroke.

I'll be very upset to have heard that this has happened to him, and if it has, I hope he's gotten some medical attention.

However, I'm more inclined to think he's just had some bad luck, like, taking some pain medication that didn't agree with him, or deciding a memorial shot of booze in honor of Pete Wilson (another talk show host who died suddenly earlier this year) was in order on the morning Pete's replacement took the chair for the first time.

You know. Something you only have to apologize for, versus something you are forced to recover from.

Digits Juxtaposed.

I think that's it for now. Have a good Tuesday, and Ronn, get well!
