Friday Fiveless Friday, Nov. 30, 2007 - 7:05 a.m. It's the last day of November. Where did the year go, anyway? --- No Friday Five today because I wasn't too inspired and I'm crampy and crabby and kind of not using too many parts of my brains because it hurts. I also have a slight cough, which makes this time of the month a real whang doodle of a fun time. However, there's chocolate in the house and as of yesterday, John owns two pairs of comfortable shoes, so that's enough good in the universe for me. However, if you feel like meming, follow the links to the left and good luck to you in finding something to inspire you. --- A little earlier this morning, I was listening to Greg Kihn interview Lawrence Juber, and one of the things they talked about was the instrumentation on the song Layla by Derek and the Dominos. Then they mentioned a man by the name of Jim Gordon, who had been part of that group, because he was the person who specifically composed the piano segment of that song. I'd never heard the man mentioned by name before, so I did some research and what I found out about him and his work knocked me on my ass. Did you guys know that the most sampled rap drum riff in history comes from a cover of an instrumental song called 'Apache'? If you follow this link, you can hear the actual riff right at the beginning of the song. Jim Gordon did that. Jim Gordon was once considered one of the finest session drummers in the business. For awhile, he was part of Derek and the Dominos, but before that, he was in The Incredible Bongo Band, and their cover of 'Apache' is where that famous riff first appears. These days, Mr Gordon is in prison for killing his mother with a hammer, because he found out the hard way that paranoid schizophrenia and cocaine don't mix too well. --- I refuse to end this post with something so bleak, so here's a joke: A man ascends to Heaven and is met by St Peter, who asks him the following question: "As we know, the first thing that Adam said to Eve was 'Madam, I'm Adam'. Now then. What was the first thing that Eve said to Adam?" The man thought about it and wasn't coming up with anything so to stall for time, he said "Wow, that's a hard one." St Peter smiled and said "Yes, that's exactly what she said! Welcome to Heaven!" --- That's it, have a good Friday. ---
