New Year's Day 2008 Tuesday, Jan. 01, 2008 - 1:23 a.m. Here's how I spent my New Year's Eve Day: I woke up at nine thirty, coughing. I decided I got tired of waking up coughing, so I took a sleep aid and it knocked me out cold for approximately the next two hours. John woke up at ten, saying "I feel like shit," which was code for "I'm cancelling the last visit to my eye doctor this year and I'm coming back to bed." I also felt like shit, but I was out cold, so I missed a lot of it in the morning. --- John, bless his heart, eventually shambled out of bed and showered and dressed so he could go and see what the parcel was at the post office. I sent my ID card and a note with him, and they took pity and gave him the parcel even though it was addressed to me. It was the His Dark Materials trilogy by Phillip Pullman. All of the hubbub about The Golden Compass made us curious, and after a month on the high seas and a slow pony, the trilogy finally got here on the last day of the year. Golly, if the uber evangelistas hadn't made such a fuss, we never would have considered its purchase. --- John also went to the grocery store, and had to park halfway down the block on the next street. He said everybody there was crazy; acting as if food was going to stop being sold everywhere on the first of January. It was John's turn to cook, so we had a pizza from Round Table. --- After he got home from the store, he put his jammies back on and crawled into bed while I watched DOOL. I went to check on him after the soap was over, and he was asleep, so I left him that way. --- Near the end of the day, we both achieved consciousness, which is when we had pizza -- and we also saw a lovely movie together that John said was just right for the interval between Christmas and New Years. It's called The Holiday, and he was right. --- Now, it's the early morning of the first day of 2008. We watched Rockin Eve, and got a glimpse of Dick Clark. He's speaking faster, and moving his impaired arm a little more than he did last year. Just as the ball dropped, Old Buddy Dave called me from Cero's so I could hear that crowd countdown. Now, we are watching Radio Days, which is among my favorite Woody Allen movies ever, and it features a very young Seth Green. There is tepid pizza sitting on the counter, some really excellent extra sharp cheddar in the fridge, and no sirens from outside. Some New Years are exciting, and some are filled with tears. This one was simply filled with joy. And coughing. But that can't last forever, and I'll be grateful when I'm done. --- That's it from here. I hope your New Year brings you the things you need. ---
