Stucco Screen & Friday Five

Friday, Jan. 11, 2008 - 1:34 a.m.

John said I skipped something in my previous entry, and that was to mention that he went to the grocery store for us on Wednesday night and was there for an hour and a half, looking for all of the weird stuff we ran out of all at once, which is why we had dinner so late.

There's your mention, darling.

I apologize for not thanking you in public for doing that.

---

So.

I discovered something on Thursday evening that made me wonder exactly how blind I am.

---

As you know, I've been grunching about my various maladies since right around Christmas.

I've had this extremely annoying cough for right at two weeks now.

It's been punctuated by sneezing, too.

Anyway, the laptop took a dive off of the tv tray it's been sitting on, and when I picked it back up and pushed restart to make sure I hadn't killed it -- it felt funny.

Like, the screen had ... a texture.

---

I moved my head at an angle and looked at the laptop screen, which did reboot and the computer is fine, thanks.

Remember those first pictures of Mars? From, like, thirty years ago? All those rocks?

Yeah. The screen was covered with phlegm rocks. Hundreds of little pebbly crusty gobbets of sputum.

And I'd been coughing for two weeks.

Bleah.

---

I finally worked up my nerve and got the spray cleaner and a dinner napkin and attacked the screen.

The napkin actually made a noise as it traveled across the screen.

And now, WOW, the colors are BRIGHT again, and the screen no longer has that stucco feeling!

---

Okay, I haven't done a Friday Five in awhile, so I went back and dug a set of two up from about two years ago:

What was the first album/CD/Cassette you ever bought?
I Robot, by the Alan Parsons Project. Still a fave.

What was your first fave song?
"Yellow Submarine" by The Beatles

Which song gives you that "funny nostalgic feeling" everytime you hear it?
At this precise moment in time, I'd have to say "Space Age Love Song" by A Flock Of Seagulls. Yeah, I don't know why, either. I just remember high school and textbooks and Kissing Potion and how wonderful and wistful this music sounded to me when I first heard it.

Name the first concert you ever went to.
Buck Owens and the Buckaroos, when I was about ... ten? eleven?... at the Yuba Sutter Fair.

What do you consider the worst song of all time?
The worst thing I've ever heard that charted was this thing called "Pop Muzik" by a group called M.

Name your fave song at the moment.
"Falling Slowly" from the soundtrack of the movie Once, and (still) "Somewhere Only We Know" by Keane.

What is the most recent album/CD/Cassette you purchased?
A greatest hits album from an obscure Canadian group called Trans X.

Which song will you never get sick of hearing?
Still pretty keen on Keane; Also I think I could probably listen to "An Ending (Ascent)" by Brian Eno for a good long time.

What is your current fave music video?
Not sure I have one; I loved the "Money For Nothing" video when it came out, and have usually since been impressed with the music video work of Hype Williams -- although I think the Beck video for "Hell Yes" featuring the choreographed robots is pretty fun.

If you could be a famous music artist, what type of music would you produce?
Ambient electronica, which is that stuff they play in lounges and planetariums. I create and produce that kind of music just fine; all I need now is the fame!

Whew. That was a ball-buster, for some reason. There's meme links to the left.

---

All right. Take care, and have a good Friday.
