Ordinary Miracles Saturday, Jan. 19, 2008 - 1:21 a.m. Yesterday, through a series of ordinary miracles like, finding both of the shoes I wanted to wear and being able to get my hair dry in under twenty minutes, I was able to get downtown to see John and visit with Bob Lai. Bob joined us for lunch so he could pick up his wife's art book, which she'd handed to John about eleven years ago with orders not to give it back until he'd drawn something in it. While I was heading there on the 1 California bus, both of the fellas called me regarding the other and the lunch arrangement, and I ferried messages between them. When I was done, I turned to the guy sitting next to me and said "I'm the only person who has everybody's number, and we're all meeting downtown for lunch! Sorry about the subspace chatter, there," I said. The guy looked at me as if I were speaking a foreign language, but then he said "No problem -- and thank you." Then his stop came up and as he got up and headed out the door, he turned back to me and said "Thanks again for your courtesy!" Which, upon reflection was a sweet thing to have been told, but it's still a little soul-dampening to realize that some forms of courtesy have become the exception and not the rule. --- We all had a magnificent visit, but we kept it to about an hour, so John could go back to work, and Bob could proceed with the rest of his day. Two surprises on the way home. First, I got to see the MUNI driver have a meltdown and park the bus and get out and scream at the driver of a double-parked delivery truck. That was pretty fun! The second surprise was when I tried to get back up two flights of stairs to our apartment and had to stop three times. I counted back and realized I hadn't been down and up the stairs since Christmas Day. --- By now, you're probably aware from some source or another that the AP already has an obituary prepared for Britney Spears 'just in case'. Well, hm. Okay. After seeing the pictures in this article, I'm inclined to think they might need to prepare one for Amy Winehouse, too. Sigh. --- Okay, done. Have a good Saturday! ---
