Shovel Vs. Trowel

Monday, Jul. 07, 2008 - 12:18 a.m.

Yesterday was quiet. I got a weensy little bit of housework done that's in the form of that kind of weensy housework that nobody on earth will see except the person who did the weensy work, but other than that, I was basically and voluntary held in the glare of the TV as I watched the last night of the Olympic trials, and a couple of DVDs.

The first one was August Rush, a movie John is really really fond of, but which I found impossible to understand at first. The first half of the movie gives us a jump cut, minimal dialogue, music video style setup of the characters, which for me, didn't work to establish any sympathy or understanding with any part of the story, or the people involved.

I thought the cinematography was so terrible that I actually cried apologetically to John, who loves this movie, and told him I was sorry, but I hated this piece of shit and was perilously close to just giving up and walking out of the room.

And then the second half of the movie turned out to be one of the nicest things I've seen all year.

Go figure.

I'll give this movie exactly two and a half stars out of five because I was only impressed by half of the movie. If you liked the movie Serendipity, but wish it had been directed by Hype Williams instead of Peter Chelsom, then August Rush might be just your thing.

I don't know if I'll watch it again but I am not sorry I saw it.

---

During one of my random searches last night, I discovered the following information that I thought was wonderful.

Kyra M. Schon -- aka Karen Cooper, the little girl in Night Of The Living Dead -- is selling inscribed trowel pendants.

America! What a country!

---

Being unable to top the above, I'll finish now.

Have a good Monday, and if you're warm, stay cool.
