Derail & Discretion

Tuesday, Sept. 16, 2008 - 12:12 a.m.

For those of you who haven't heard, last Friday afternoon, there was a massive train accident a little ways away from where I am right now, in Chatsworth, in which a Metroliner blew through a red light and collided with another train.

Twenty-five people were killed.

The working theory now is that the engineer was exchanging text messages with a couple of teenagers.

Still waiting to see how this pans out; many liability issues are at play here.

---

I was chatting with Minstrelite yesterday evening, and I mused as to whether or not I was sharing enough of my life with you.

He said something about being discretion being the better part of valor, and pointed me to Proverbs 29:11, which says something like:

A fool utters all of his mind,
But a wise man keeps it under control.

Now, mind you, I've always actually tried to live by something along those lines, as I wrote in the third paragraph of advice herein.

But I'd been thinking about the various things I had been reading during my online rounds, and here, more than five years after I've begun, I was beginning to wonder if I'd shared enough of what's in my life with my readers.

And I have decided that the answer is yes.

Compared to the other diaries I have seen, I'm doing an okay job, but without too many of the horrifying day to day details -- unless I do something particularly disgusting or similarly spectacular, and feel like sharing with the class.

---

After an evening of Deep Thought, I've realized something.

If I shared everything I know about from my activities of the last quarter century, I would be mentioned in the docket of at least three divorces, and at least two ex-relationships would be in prison for very very long periods of time.

So, in the end, I think this is the wisest path.

Besides, there's that quote that's been attributed to Mark Twain, which goes "It's better to keep your mouth shut and have people think you're a fool, than to open it and remove all doubt."

---

There's nothing specifically on tap here at Chez TooOld except for me getting packed again before I leave on Thursday.

It's something that's always an adventure.

---

That's it. Have a nice Tuesday.
