Making Music

Monday, Mar. 30, 2009 - 1:34 a.m.

Yesterday, it was my unparalelled pleasure to go try my hand at background vocals and harmonies with Alan Brownlee's current band.

Everybody was welcoming, and as of this writing, I don't know of any problems.

---

I had forgotten how much fun it was to just plain old sing rock music. Oh, I shamble around up on stage with Bob and Dave and Dave when the spirit moves me, but to actually participate in and hone each song on a very long playlist as a potentially regular part of a group?

I haven't done that since 1983 when I was part of one of Alan's *first* bands.

Oh, god, the 80s clothing. Specifically, the thing I purchased for use when we sang at that pool party.

It was a one piece jumpsuity thing, but it was cut above the knee. It had vertical blue and white stripes, an asymetrical ruffle around the neck, great big poofy sleeves, and short pant legs that just couldn't resist riding up into my crotch.

Oh, and I bought a wide white belt to wear with it.

Jesus weeps at the memory, I am almost certain of it.

I know *I* nearly do.

---

Overall, it went really well, at least in my universe, and apparently what the long-term plan is will be for anybody in the band who is doing more than one thing at once (singing and playing) to be able to hand off to me if they want to concentrate on playing instead of playing and trying to also harmonize.

The lyric book is sizeable; I have about fifty songs to reacquaint myself with. But they are songs I've heard a lot, and mostly all I have to do is pick out the harmony -- so I think I'm going to be okay with this.

---

Now, the day started really early for me when it didn't have to, and it's my own fault.

I got up at eight in the morning to monitor an ebay auction which was ending at fifteen after the hour.

And after I logged in and had my finger on the trigger -- that is when I noticed that the time the auction ended was in fact eight-fifteen in the evening.

I puzzled about this to Alan at one point. I was sure I'd seen enough Sesame Street to have known the difference between AM and PM, but then again, nobody can ever see too much Sesame Street, right?...

So after a frantic phone call in the late morning, Old Buddy Dave took over for me and made sure I won the item.

Thank you, OBDave. You rock for doing that for me.

---

Sunday was a great day to be making music.

That's it. Thanks for reading, and have a good Monday.
