Friday Five & Roses

Friday, Nov. 06, 2009 - 12:43 a.m.

Once in awhile, the cloudy weather or the crummy news will get me down to places I probably shouldn't be.

Then just at the last minute, along comes a very nice piece of news that for some reason, seems to make a nice little piece of sunshine all on its own:

(Excerpt from Reuters)

The Tournament of Roses revealed today that the heroic pilot who masterfully landed US Airways Flight 1549, Captain Chesley B. "Sully" Sullenberger, III, will serve as the Grand Marshal for the 2010 Tournament of Roses festivities. Themed 2010: A Cut Above The Rest, the 121st Rose Parade will pay tribute to everyday heroes and the effort to always improve and enhance. As Grand Marshal, Sullenberger will ride in the 121st Rose Parade in front of a worldwide television audience, and toss the coin before the 96th Rose Bowl Game on January 1, 2010.

I went and took a look at a list of past Grand Marshals, and found out that Sully seems to be in good company.

Among others, his fellow Grand Marshal flyboys included Eddie Rickenbacker, John Glenn, Buzz Aldrin, and the Apollo 12 crew.

The list makes interesting reading; among the people who have been the Grand Marshal more than once are Earl Warren, Richard Nixon, and Shirley Temple Black, who was bestowed the honor first in 1939 and again in 1989 and 1999.

Friday Five from last week...

What is your happiest memory?
Singing an original song in public for the first time is up there; the rest of the happy stuff has been on my birthday with one notable exception. Heh.

What is the most important life lesson you've learned?
Once in awhile it's okay to grow a pair and speak up for yourself when you have been wronged.

What is the most difficult decision you've had to make?
It happened in 1991, and had to do with two men that I dearly loved. But I survived the decision, and the man I did not end up with is still very sweet to me. And yes, John knows, and yes John is cool with it because Things Are Different Now, and despite the heartbreak, I think the moral is that I think most of the time in my life, there have been pretty wonderful guys around. Including now!

What is the best thing about your life?
The best thing about my life is that I'm still on this side of the dirt. Oh, and when I get forgiven. That rocks.

What is the biggest challenging you're facing right now?
How to spend more time up here on this side of the dirt. So far, so good.

The link is to the left, if you wish to play.

That's it. Have an excellent Friday.
