Detrius & Dan Thursday, Nov. 19, 2009 - 2:48 a.m. John and I are on the eternal quest for a replacement dentifrice for our current favorite, Arm & Hammer gel, which has been discontinued in tube form. I bought myself a tube of Colgate Total gel the last time I traveled, and only recently rediscovered it in the luggage detrius. It's kind of an okay half-assed substitute for A&H, and it's nice and gritty, which makes it feel like something is getting accomplished. The plan is that we'll both use it up and decide whether to get some more. But I remember liking it a couple of weeks ago, so I think this will work. --- If all goes well, I'll be in Sacramento by this time tomorrow, visiting my friend Dan. I have known Dan for thirty years and change. His parents and my parents knew one another, which is how we met, on the Yuba City side of the Feather River levee on July 4, 1978. I had just turned thirteen, and he was sixteen, turning seventeen that December. He and I dated on and off through high school, and finally, we went our separate ways -- but we never stopped being friends. He's one of those guys I could call from any place on the planet, and he'd drop whatever he was doing and come find me. The last time I saw him in person was in mid March of 1995, at my mom's funeral. I was in such a haze that I didn't take pictures or pay too much attention to what was going on or who was there, so I am really looking forward to seeing him and having a conversation that I'll stand a chance of recalling at a later date. In the fourteen years since our last visit, he acquired, raised, and euthanized a domestic short-haired feline named Molly. Since she was put to sleep about a month ago, that really galvanized me and made me think I'm some kind of shitful friend if I didn't visit Dan for the length of an entire cat. So away I go. Please send good vibes and assorted travel mercies as you see fit, friends. Thanks. --- Not a lot else to report. Have a good Thursday, and holy shit, I never want to pack for a two day trip again in my life. The two-week jaunts to Anaheim never bother me too any real extent as far as what to pack and so forth. But to pare it down to two days worth of stuff? Eesh. Brain cramp. --- Okay, off I go. Take care. ---
