Avatar

Wednesday, Dec. 30, 2009 - 12:33 a.m.

When I was twelve, I went and saw Star Wars at the Sutter Theatre in Yuba City.

I loved the splendor and the effects and I never thought I would ever have my mind blown like that again.

Until last night.

John and I saw Avatar.

---

The story is simple and familiar, like most of Jim Cameron's work.

If you are expecting something cerebral and life-changing, this won't do it.

But if you want every beautiful thing you have ever seen on a movie screen to be squashed into a really nice adventure and if you want to enjoy the ride?

This is the movie for you.

We saw it in 3D, and the effects were like nothing else we'd seen before.

The efforts put forth by the CGI people were astounding. I have never seen emotion on the face of a created character in quite this depth before.

I loved the skin, the dust, the bugs, the chaff, and the ashes.

Oh, and the creatures and battle armor and planet was pretty spiffy, too.

But the little stuff sells the story. It makes the difference between an experience versus a cartoon.

And there's actually COLOR in this James Cameron film, other than blue.

---

We might sneak out and go see it again before John concludes his vacation.

Then I'm scheduled to go and see it with Big D a month from now when I'm in Anaheim visiting Old Buddy Dave.

As far as I'm concerned, at this point in time, I'm not sure I could see this movie too many times.

It's wonderful. See it in a theatre. See it in 3D

And for fuck's sake, pee before you take your seat.

---

All right, that's it. Have a good Wednesday.
