Return From Exile

Monday, Aug. 16, 2010 - 12:08 a.m.

Well. The instant I have my back turned on the blogging world, shit happens.

And I'm not being a drama queen either; shit really did happen.

---

On Wednesday, August 11th, the day after my self-imposed blogging exile began, I got a message from Old Buddy Dave. My regular readers know that Old Buddy Dave is the drummer in the Bob Chance Band, with Bob on guitar, and Dave Kern on bass.

Dave Kern's wife Angie had died of a heart attack Wednesday morning. She was 50.

I adored Angie. She had one of those laughs that made you laugh along with her until she stopped long enough to tell you what the joke was. I once saw her pay for a dollar dance with a bride so she could get a good look at the dress and see how the bride was holding up. Every time I saw her play pool at the bar where the band played, she beat the shit out of her opponent.

And she redefined the term 'fiercely loyal' when it came to her friends.

Here she is, peeking past the table foliage, with her husband at that wedding, aboard the Queen Mary a couple of years ago:

I only knew her for about five years and small change.

But I am grateful to have counted her among my friends.

---

On Thursday, though, we were due at my father-in-law's 75th birthday.

I was still kind of shell shocked and depressed and I wasn't sure I should have gone.

But in retrospect, it was the only place I should have been.

There were cousins and family friends by the carload, most of which I had managed not to have met yet despite being married to John for almost nineteen years.

And the handful of rellies who remembered what I looked like the previous Christmas complimented the haircut John gave me.

Along with an endless amount of food and drink, there was also a prodigious amount of conversation, and it was lovely to be a part of the afternoon.

Plus, there was cake. Cake fixes a lot of things.

---

So, yeah. it's been a week.

I love my family, and I love my friends, and in the end, they've been what's eventually put a smile on my face again.

And you guys out there? You're part of it, too.

So, thanks.

---

All right, that's it. Have a good Monday.
