Never Fixed

Monday, Sept. 13, 2010 - 12:07 a.m.

PG&E has mysteriously been unable to find its gas leak inspection logs having to do with the San Bruno gas line that exploded, even though there are eyewitnesses that place a PG&E worker at the site the previous Tuesday.

John says -- to coin a phrase -- that something smells.

---

Speaking of John -- hooray, he had ANOTHER piece of mail tampered with.

He filed a theft report, and now we wait. It was just a CD, but that's beside the point.

---

First of all, thank you to Omaha Dave. The offer to finance the ferry trips was very generous and heartfelt and I've rarely been so moved.

But as I told Omaha, there was more to the story. I am not going to discuss the exact details here, but I sent Alan an Alan-specific exit letter. with very different content than was in my public resignation. I am not expecting I wrote to him to make any difference, but I thought I owed it to Alan to list all of the reasons for my departure.

I'm utterly and completely disappointed that it came to this, but there's a finite amount of tolerance available to even the most patient among us.

Broken things were discussed at length, but never fixed.

Just one of those things.

---

In other news, the Chilean miners got a bigger vent hole this week, and will soon be allowed to occasionally have a cigarette.

You can be in peril for your life, trapped in a hole thousands of feet deep, with no sunlight for a month -- but my goodness, those smokes. Gotta have em.

I am an ex cigarette smoker. I quit cold turkey over thirty years ago. No, that's not a typo, gods help us, I was a smoker in junior high and through part of my freshman year of high school.

I still miss cigarettes. I mourn their loss once in awhile when I eat something wonderful, because my smoking bone is going to forever be connected to my eating bone.

Anyone who has been unable to quit will tell you they have not come to terms with the fact that they'll have the smoking jones forever, and they'll have to choose to forfeit cigarettes every day of their lives for many years. There will be days when they might forget, but it will always come back.

Personally? I will always opt for not blazing up. I figured things out and I have my tricks.

But my thoughts are, as long as it doesn't actually endanger everybody else's lives, let the smokers have a drag.

Their craving hasn't gone away in a month, believe me.

---

That's pretty much it. Have a good Monday.
