Fremantle!

Sunday, May. 15, 2011 - 12:56 p.m.

On Thursday April 28th, Paul's friend KeweyRoo showed up in his car to take us to Fremantle. Tamara tagged along, too. For those who don't know, this is where the Australia II is housed, and sitting up in the middle of the night and watching the 1987 America's Cup race was one of the things that sparked my interest in Australia.

Fremantle is beautiful and temperate, and even when it's warm in Perth, over in Fremantle, it will be moderate, with a very famous and wonderful ocean breeze that comes up every summer afternoon, called the Fremantle Doctor.

Here's a picture of some of the boats in the harbor:

And here's Paul to the left and Kewey to the right in the hat, as Paul directs us to one of his favorite fish and chips places.

Below, the fish and chips place itself, Cicerello's. I don't think I have ever had fish so fresh and delicious. It wouldn't surprise me if it was Same Day fish, which is something I hadn't had since I was a little girl at my grandparents' house.

Kewey and I talked about music. He's also an electronic music artist like me.

Below is a popular sign, admonishing patrons not to give any food to the flying rats:

But the birds insisted on visiting anyway:

After lunch, we traipsed over to the Western Australia Shipwreck Museum. (I took a number of pictures, but the images were taken with no flash, and they didn't turn out like I would have wanted them to, so let me send you to this site instead.)

FInally, we all went over to the Western Australia Maritime Museum:

And when we walked in, and got through the gift shop... I took a picture that was supposed to have looked like this, but I had tears in my eyes when I was taking it, so it was too blurry. Instead, the following image was taken by and borrowed with permission from a bloke named Ken Hodge. Thank you , Ken!... But this is what I saw:

There it was -- the Australia II. The ship that had planted the seed. The main reason I'd started thinking of Australia in the first place.

And here's a picture of the bow. I took this one:

Paul Kidd took this one, of me with the Australia II...

And finally, Kewey took this one, of me and Paul, in front of the museum.

We finally had our fill of Fremantle, so we piled in the car and went back to headquarters.

That night, Kewey insisted we obtain something he's pretty certain that no other nation offers. It's a Coat Of Arms pizza, meaning that the pizza is made with kangaroo meat and emu sausage!

I wasn't sure how well this would sit, but the pizza turned out to be extremely delicious:

Finally, the visit wound down, and Kewey headed on home. It had been a lovely day, and I'd felt really priveleged to have seen the Australia II.

That's it from Fremantle. More pictures next time!
