Goofed on NyQuil

Tuesday, Aug. 09, 2005 - 10:03 a.m.

I am very very very very glad to see that Discovery made it home safe and sound.

Yesterday's landing attempt had me up far into the night, and my sleep remained twitted for the rest of the day.

Early yesterday after the shuttle landing was postponed, it was four in the morning here and I decided to take a dose of NyQuil to try and get some sleep.

At eight forty-five, my husband woke me up to say good bye, receive a kiss, and have me see him out the door.

I flopped back into the bed and slept immediately.

Then at nine -- I heard somebody in the living room.

I was terrified. I grabbed my cell phone and had it open, ready to call 911 and report a dead intruder. I also had the sash from my bathrobe, which I was planning to use to garrote whoever was in the room.

I made 'go away burglar' noises, so the prowler could escape with whatever he happened to have in his hands, and prayed it was not the laptop. But whoever it was was still there.

Then I went out into the living room.

It was John. He'd forgotten his wallet and watch.

But bless his heart, he didn't want to wake me.

I stayed awake after he left.

My heart finally stopped thundering at around ten in the morning.

I'd been so goofed on NyQuil it never occurred to me that John would have needed to return. Oy.

Wow, Elizabeth Vargas is having a shitty week, huh?...

(CNN) -- Singer Marc Cohn, known for the 1991 smash hit "Walking in Memphis," was shot in the head Sunday during an attempted carjacking in Denver but survived, his manager said Monday.

Cohn has been treated and released from Denver Health Medical Center, his manager, Karen Malluk, said in a written statement.

Police said Cohn had performed at the Denver Botanical Gardens on Sunday night and was driving back to his hotel with band members when a man who was fleeing security officers tried to carjack their van.

The van's driver tried to drive around the gunman, who then fired, striking Cohn, police spokesman Sonny Jackson said.

"Marc Cohn was shot in the head above his right temple. The bullet was lodged in his head but has since been taken out," Malluk said. . . . Cohn won the 1991 Grammy for Best New Artist, the same year his "Walking in Memphis" was a chart-topper. He is married to ABC News correspondent and 20/20 co-anchor Elizabeth Vargas.

Hope the guy will be okay.
