Mystery Grot & Etc. Tuesday, Feb. 20, 2007 - 1:33 a.m. John's Mystery Grot continues. He's going to call his doctor, describe his symptoms, and see if she'll prescribe something without him having to go in and get poked and prodded. --- I was able to sell the Seger Tickets last night for below cover to a very cool guy who sounded like Tommy Chong on the telephone. --- Ian Maurice dropped me a line to let me know he was going to use Old Buddy Dave's line about Britney Spears' baldness. So, the blue-hairs of Brisbane got to hear The Bear say that the curtains match the rug. Wish I could have been there.:-) --- Well, darn. Last night, the drummer from the first band I was ever in was in San Francisco with his current group. I guess I should read the MySpace bulletins more often! --- Finally -- I'm sorry I didn't write about this before now, but, a week ago today, we lost an artist without whose work the live action Disney films would have looked a lot less brilliant and fanciful. Peter Ellenshaw died at the age of 93. He was the principal matte artist at Disney for many years. Whether it was a cave full of leprechaun's treasure, an imaginary neighborhood where a Siamese cat made its rounds, or simply an extra story on a mansion, his matte artistry was unparalleled. As with those who still enjoy the richness of the sound of a 33 LP, there is something about the use of a matte painting versus a CGI that is just a little more warm and hands-on. I was sorry to hear of his passing, and I think his work was wonderful. ---
