Books & Survey Monday, Jul. 02, 2007 - 4:23 a.m. I was listening to Ian Maurice on 4BC, and he was asking people if they could remember the earliest book they had read. To the best of my recollection, I was off and running with Dr. Seuss, but my first "great big long book with no pictures" was probably The Black Stallion by Walter Farley. Can anybody else remember their first book? --- I filched this from Chicago Bob over on MySpace. 1. Are you taller than your mom? 2. What color is your shower curtain? 3. Favorite Slurpee flavor? --- Early Sunday morning, after Cinema Insomnia was over, the local PBS station played another movie -- 1955's "The Man With The Golden Arm" with Frank Sinatra and Kim Novak. John and I had always heard of this movie but we had never gotten around to actually seeing it for ourselves. Though the subject matter was bleak -- an addicted musician trying to kick a heroin habit -- the story was superlatively filmed by Otto Preminger, and Frank Sinatra, in a star-making role that he didn't need to do because he was already a star -- quite simply, kicked ass. There's at least a half-dozen character actors from then that you've seen in a bunch of movies, and if you're a fan of 'A Christmas Story', then you'll want to watch Darrin McGavin AKA Ralphie's dad, thirty years younger with a villain's pencil-thin mustache, play a drug kingpin. --- There you go. Have a nice Monday, if at all possible. ---
