The Book / Jamie's Birthday

Saturday, Jul. 28, 2007 - 1:42 a.m.

I just finished the final Harry Potter book about fifteen minutes ago.

I'm mostly done crying, but will in all probability weep a time or two again during the subsequent re-reads.

---

I'm horrified about the news helicopter collision in Phoenix. And I'm very sorry so many people died.

But the sad fact is, the guy who was at the center of the police chase is not responsible for the deaths.

Yes, it's true, the helicopters were both focused on obtaining images of that runaway driver.

BUT

Those helicopters would have been in close proximity and present over ANY breaking story that involved overhead coverage. A runaway circus tiger, an outdoor celebrity wedding, even two little old ladies in a fender bender and clobbering one another with umbrellas.

It's their responsibility as helicopter pilots to be aware of everything going on around them.

Unless it's found to be mechanical failure on the part of one or the other of the vehicles -- this, sadly is nothing more than a terrible case of pilot error, and the runaway driver might be charged with, but not found responsible for, their deaths.

---

All right. Have a good Saturday.

And happy birthday to the Best Friend I've Yet To Meet -- Jamie Lord.

Jamie, when I think of our friendship, I know the Creator must surely have a sense of humor. A gay man and a mostly straight woman, separated by a continent and lifestyles -- you and I are irrevocably intertwined, with little reminders through our lives -- and I find joy in this friendship, each and every day.

Okay, NOW I'm done. See you again next time!
