Them & Friday Five

Saturday, Aug. 02, 2008 - 1:55 a.m.

At the stroke of midnight tonight, right before I began writing this post, John picked out a DVD for us to watch.

He chose "Them!", the original 1954 black and white classic movie about giant radiated ants.

John and I both can't stand ants, so we have reasons for liking the movie.

James Whitmore, Jim Arness and Edmund Gwenn are the leads, which means it's fabulous by default, but there's a nice clump of uncredited extras in this movie, too. William Schallert, Dub Taylor, Richard Deacon, and Leonard Nimoy (about 53 minutes into the film, pulling paper off of the teletype).

And don't miss the role of the Ellison Girl, played by Sandy Descher. She's dynamite.

There's even a Wilhelm Scream at around the one hour mark.

Hey, wow, look, over in the Livejournal Friday Five community forum; look whose FF they chose!

Name one movie you wish everybody could watch.

Interstate 60, because not enough people have seen it. I can think of a half dozen other films that are more important and a far less waste of time, but this one was just plain fun.

Name two books you wish everybody could read.

The Handbook To Higher Consciousness, by Ken Keyes, and the original uncensored version of Tom Sawyer.

Name three goals you wish everybody could achieve.

1. Freedom from want 2. Acceptance of self, and 3. Liberty.

Name four people you wish everybody could know.

1. My Uncle Joe, (deceased) but if you are gay, male, over the age of eighty, and living between Sacramento and the Oregon border, you probably knew him, 2. Jay Norton, (deceased) My Radio & Television Broadcasting teacher in my senior year of high school, who taught me how to listen to news stories, and really drove it home to me that most of the stuff on television, including the news, is bullshit, 3. Toren Smith, who had the distinction of never to have attended college, but is one of the brightest people I have ever met, and 4. Martin Angell, who was my penpal for five years, from 1984-1989, and then visited me from Amsterdam for the month of August. It was the summer of a lifetime.

Name five places you wish everybody could visit.

San Francisco, Disneyland, The Sutter Buttes, The Great Basin, and Snoqualmie Falls, WA.

Link to the left, and above. Woo!

I think today, John and I are gonna go for a drive over to the Speakeasy to see which tickets are still available for which of the benefits, and to see about the parking sitch.

Wish us luck!

Okay, done. Have a good Saturday.
