Puter Stuff & Mama Afrika

Monday, Nov. 10, 2008 - 12:13 a.m.

My husband's computering. Let me show you it.

This weekend, I installed GarageBand on John's computer, and he learned how to import songs from iTunes and edit them for seamless transitions. The learning exercise he wanted to try was to edit the separate cuts of Part One of Harry Nilsson's 'The Point' CD back into one long piece. This was on Saturday evening, and we more-or-less achieved the goal.

On Sunday, when I shambled out of bed after my afternoon nap, I received a very gladdening surprise: John had retained what he had learned the previous night, opened GarageBand himself, and unassisted, had stitched together Part Two.

I was really glad to see how much he enjoyed working with GarageBand.

And as to the particular instance of The Point, why on earth couldn't the manufacturer of the CD simply offer a optional special edition "two long cuts" version of this work?... Oh well...

In other news, my cell phone's battery is in the process of finally going to The Big Recycling Bin In The Sky; I have been reticent to go near a Verizon kiosk after my previous unpleasant experience with them, and because the phones we have are three years old and I don't want to deal with some kiosk kid trying to sell me something new.

I also hear stories of older phones with bluetooth capabilities being reconfoogled so as not to allow wireless connects with bluetooth enabled computers that will allow the computers to use the Verizon network. My bluetooth is acknowledged by my laptop, and I'd like to keep it that way, namely, out of the hands of the cell phone company employees for as long as is humanly possble.

So I shopped from home.

I'm just now hearing the news that South African singer and activist Miriam Makeba, whose birth name is Zenzile Makeba Qgwashu Nguvama Yiketheli Nxgowa Bantana Balomzi Xa Ufun Ubajabulisa Ubaphekeli Mbiza Yotshwala Sithi Xa Saku Qgiba Ukutja Sithathe Izitsha Sizi Khabe Singama Lawu Singama Qgwashu Singama Nqamla Nqgithi, but who was more commonly known as 'Mama Afrika', has died in Italy of a heart attack immediately after a concert, at the age of 76.

Presumably there will be a forthcoming announcement for a fund raiser to pay for her gravestone.

Okay, that's it. Have a good Monday.
