For Faith, Who Did Good

Monday, Oct. 20, 2003 - 6:18 a.m.

David Blaine finished his latest endeavor. Congratulations.

So I'm looking at my Diaryland stats.

Somebody found their way here by Googling the phrase 'Can Sidney Poitier Sing'. Which I guess is better than finding it through Googling the phrase 'Gerbil Felchers Anonymous'. Oddly enough, neither phrase has appeared in my diary before now -- so there's always a first time for everything.

Sometimes people find their way here with the phrase 'I Can Hear The Ocean', which as near as I've been able to find out, happens to be the title of an animated feature film from Japan. I'm a manga babe myself; not quite as up to date on the anime as I should be.

Although I -do- wanna know more about that crazy hamster.

ANYway...

For those Diarylanders who are not Gold or Supergold, the stats page will tell you which ISPs have logged in to your site, and what was the last page they looked at before they got here.

Today I am not worried about who is visiting my site.

I'm more worried about who has NOT visited.

One of my regular readers is MIA, and I'm just sort of concerned here. There was an impending situation and I think it came to a head over the last few days, and I'll be very glad to see that person log in from home or from work -- just so I know s/he hasn't been chopped up and the bits and pieces hidden out under the shed. :)

If you're reading this, friend, I hope you're logging in from your work over your first cup of coffee and that things in your life have settled down to an acceptable roar.

Semi-private: Thanks, Jamie, and thanks Andrew.:)

Today's entry is dedicated to Faith Fancher. She was a newswoman here in the Bay Area who had breast cancer for six years. She died yesterday evening, but not before spending countless hours at work on her foundation, and getting the word out about early detection. Her work probably saved or prolonged a lot of lives. When she was asked how she wanted to be remembered, she said she wanted people to refer to her as "Faith, who did good."

Sounds fine to me.

Itty Bitty Update: My friend just showed up in my stats logs, and as far as I'm able to determine, has -not- gone bonkers and begun snapping small animals in half. Whew.

But then again, it's only Monday.

It's sad that she died. It is great that she did turn her struggle into a crusade though. Hope she is resting in peace.

I lost my own mother to this disease in 1995; her memory is honored by people like Faith. :)

Yes, "I can hear the ocean" (Umi Ga Kikoeru) is a Japanese animated for TV movie (as opposed to a theatrical one) done by Studio Ghibli. Studio Ghibli is known for such works as "Kiki's Delivery Service", "Princess Mononoke", and recently, "Spirited Away". The movie is about the main character's memories of his days in high school. Friendship, subtle love, a trip to Tokyo and so on all came back to him as he returns home for his high school reunion. Its a touching, thoughtful piece. And far as eulogies go, I think Faith's is a prety good one to be remembered by.
