Dodging The Bullet

Wednesday, Aug. 23, 2006 - 1:00 a.m.

Dave has written about his travails, so I'm going to write about it now, too, because it encompassed my entire day.

---

He called me Monday evening to tell me something, and when I heard his news, my peripheral vision faded.

He told me he'd found blood in a place where a man really should never find blood.

He was going to the doctor on Tuesday for a checkup and a diagnosis.

---

When I'm nervous about something, especially something I know almost nothing about, I react by getting on the Internet and doing as much research about it as I can. Panic is pointless, and if I educate myself about a given situation, it's easier to handle.

So I did. I was a lot more relieved the more I read. Blood in That Place is uncommon, but 90% of the time, it's curable by patience, or medication. That other ten percent buzzed around my head like an uncatchable mosquito, so I stayed up all night and kept reading. I even sent a note to Ian Maurice, the talk show host in Brisbane that I listen to when I'm up, and he sent regards out over the air.

I found a lot of reading about what was ailing Dave, and sent links to him about it, and what to expect the doctor to do, and what sort of medication they were probably going to prescribe, and so on and so forth. He's also set to not have the symptom go away for about another two weeks at the earliest, but as long as none of the other symptoms associated with the problem actually came to pass, he was going to be fine.

Sure enough, the doctor gave him the ooh-ahh test, and found some swelling. Dave is now on Cipro, and the problem will be cleared up in the next two or three weeks.

Thank you, higher powers, for not doing anything too terrible to one of my best friends in the world.

---

I slept about an hour in the late morning, and the rest of the time, I've been online.

Due to my overwhelming need to be informed about what was going on with Dave, I did entirely too much research about anomalies involving various and sundry fluids and the prostate gland and et cetera, and I am now in all likelihood quite qualified to give prostate examinations.

And you? Yes, you. Before you ask, the answer is no.

Pull your pants back up. :-)

---

So for the rest of Tuesday, and now into early Wednesday, I've been wandering around with tears in my eyes since getting the news that it's a hell of a lot less serious than it could have been.

---

I managed to function normally enough for the rest of Tuesday evening, and made soft tacos for dinner, which my infinitely patient husband John complimented me on, and watched the season finale of Work Out.

I plan to sleep well.

---

Okay, there. Have a good Wednesday.
