Advent & The Big Jump

Saturday, Dec. 01, 2007 - 1:11 a.m.

Happy December First!

Today is the first day you open your advent calendar, if you happen to utilize one.

I used to love opening the little windows, and that little extra touch every day in December before Christmas was always very special to me.

Nowadays, Target is using an advent calendar gimmick in a series of their commercials.

This is uncomfortable for me to see, because I would no more want this happening than if they were selling stuff by lighting Menorah candles or conjuring them with winter witchcraft.

Any time religious trappings are used to sell secular stuff, I just tend to get put off.

Look at this: A bunch of songwriters are under lock and key, in hopes that they are productive.

I suppose if a person is stuck in a box, it's better to be composing instead of decomposing...

Okay, there's a variation on Google that's the shiznit.

I bring you Gizoogle.

And finally, bookmakers everywhere have slashed their wrists.

Why? Because none other than Evel Knievel has died -- of natural causes.

The BBC has a really nice set of pictures along with a pretty good obituary.

Let me go on record as saying that the Evel Knievel Daredevil Stunt Cycle was among the best toys we ever had.

There was plenty of room at the elementary school to run one of those things, but generally, on weekends, if there were any staff people present on campus, we'd get asked to stop playing with the toy on the covered open walkways (which were concrete) and would summarily be relegated to the asphalt, which was bumpy and didn't really make for a straight line whenever Evel was launched from his thingie.

The doll that came with this kit was soft plastic, over a bendable wire frame, the construction of which coincidentally matched Evel's own anatomical components after so many wrecks and broken bones.

And when the wires in the doll gave out, the resemblance became even more striking.

Rest in peace, Evel.

That's it. Have a good Saturday.
