Hair And Glasses

Sunday, Dec. 28, 2008 - 1:00 a.m.

I was looking for some temporary haircoloring; my grey hairs sometimes manage to depress me, and when that happens, I go snag some of that 'six week' stuff and glop it on and not worry about it for awhile.

My usual range of color choices were not available, so just out of curiosity, I went and looked at the men's hair colors.

Light Blonde, Dark Blonde, Light Brown, Medium Brown, Dark Brown, and Black.

And that was it.

Meanwhile, over on the ladies' side, the color choices look something like this.

The names have been changed to protect my innocence:

Lightest Platinum Blonde
Lemons And Peaches Blonde
Fair Spring Water Blonde
Threshed Wheat Blonde
Golden Honey Meringue Blonde
Harvested Hay Ash Blonde
Tangy Orange Light Auburn
Red Rosy Cheeks Auburn
Cinnamon Cranberry Apple Auburn
Snapping Autumn Twigs Brown
Mulled Cider Brightest Brown
Fresh Walnut Chocolate Brown
Ashes of Brown Ash Brown
Cherry Brownish Kind Of Brown
Brown Mink Brownity Brown
Deep Blackish Brownish Black
Basic Black
Raven's Wing Black
Blackity Blackest Black
Rolls Royce Blue Black

Now, I had to ponder this, and I think I've come up with something.

I believe that since women are the primary shoppers of most family units, we are being offered more choices.

Or it's an attempt by Somebody Somewhere to make we gals so utterly insecure about our looks that we'll grab something that's almost right instead of what's exactly right, which will beget six weeks of suffering while enduring the stupid color we chose, and then come buy more beauty products to quell our insecurities.

I don't know. :)

---

Tomorrow I get my first eye examination in about thirty years.

I am having trouble seeing anything less than eighteen inches away from my face, which has made it impossible to read in bed without the aid of a cherry-picker.

It's also resulted in my beleagured husband grabbing reading material out of my outstretched hand because he thinks I'm handing it back to him when all I'm trying to do is bring it into focus within the pool of light from our shared-between-the-chairs floor lamp.

So, my digits are firmly juxtaposed. Hopefully there's a prescription for glasses out there with my name on it, as of the end of the day tomorrow.

---

That's pretty much it. Have an excellent Sunday.
