Paul Harvey 1918-2009

Sunday, Mar. 01, 2009 - 12:03 a.m.

Saturday evening, one of my radio fixtures passed away.

Radio legend Paul Harvey was 90, and missing his wife very much.

Angel Harvey died eight months earlier from leukemia.

Everybody will remember him better than I shall, so I'll just say...

Paul Harvey... good BYE.

John and I watched Blazing Saddles on DVD last night. It was also on television, which means you get a cropped and censored pile of celluloud that is only worth the name Zing Sad.

I'd forgotten how lowbrow and just plain funny this thing is.

Mel Brooks had actually approached John Wayne to do the part of The Waco Kid. John took a copy of the script, said he'd read it at home, and to please meet him back here at this comissary table tomorrow.

Alas -- John Wayne had to turn him down.

What he said to Mel Brooks was this: "I just can't do this. And I can't do it because I'm John Wayne. I laughed like a sonofagun all night at it and I think it's brilliant, and I'm gonna be first in line to see it, but I have to turn you down."

Might have worked. Might have tanked.

Glad Gene Wilder did it.

All right, that's pretty much it.

Happy March First. :)
